Um dos maiores poetas populares do mundo é brasileiro; e, para nossa felicidade, nascido em solo potiguar. Mossoroense, Antonio Francisco talvez seja a melhor revelação da poesia popular surgida no Rio Grande do Norte, desde Fabião das Queimadas, famoso escravo cantador de rabeca, que comprou sua própria alforria ganhando dinheiro através dos seus versos.
Filho de Francisco Petronilo de Melo, um ex-jogador de futebol das décadas de 1940 e 50, e Pêdra Teixeira de Melo, Antonio Francisco nasceu aos 21 de outubro de 1949; mas, somente após os 40 anos, tomou gosto pela poesia, pelo menos como autor, tornando-se um poeta popular. O reconhecimento da qualidade da sua produção levou-o a ser eleito, em 2006, para a Academia Brasileira de Literatura de Cordel (ABLC), onde ocupa a cadeira de número 15, cujo patrono é o poeta cearense Patativa do Assaré. Por falar nisso, alguns estudiosos do cordel o consideram uma espécie de Patativa de Assaré da nova geração.
Um dos seus livros mais conhecidos, Dez cordéis num cordel só (2001), representa, sem dúvidas, um marco na poesia popular brasileira; nele, o poeta mossoroense retrata inúmeras situações e imagens da vida cotidiana do homem nordestino, sempre costurando, ao longo dos seus enredos, um fundo de reflexão social e espiritualidade. A linguagem utilizada é a do homem comum, na fala simples do cotidiano nordestino.
Sua poesia de alto nível vem sendo estudada em universidades e escolas públicas e privadas do Rio Grande do Norte. Além da valorização local, instituições de ensino de outros estados, como São Paulo, Pernambuco e Ceará, adotaram os cordéis de Antonio Francisco.
Seu nome é unanimidade entre os estudiosos e pesquisadores do cordel. Crispiniano Neto, Luiz Antônio, Rubens Coelho, Clotilde Tavares, Caio César Muniz, Geraldo Maia, Marcos Ferreira, Kyldelmir Dantas, Cid Augusto, Francisco Martins, Manoel Cavalcante e Nildo da Pedra Branca, todos se referem aos seus versos com as melhores palavras.
HOMENAGENS
Antonio Francisco já recebeu inúmeras homenagens, como, por exemplo, aquela que lhe foi prestada pela Prefeitura Municipal de Areia Branca, através da Secretaria de Educação, tendo em vista o seu trabalho em prol da cultura nordestina e potiguar. Foi homenageado por diversas outras instituições, e distinguido com o título de cidadão honorário das cidades de Natal e de Icapuí (CE).
Antonio Francisco foi um dos que carregaram a Tocha Olímpica, quando dos Jogos Olímpicos no Rio de Janeiro, em 2016, durante a passagem desta pelo Brasil, como reconhecimento pelo seu trabalho de divulgação e elevação do nome da cidade de Mossoró nacionalmente. Em todas as apresentações que o carismático poeta realiza pelo Brasil, faz questão de enfatizar que é mossoroense e destaca que nasceu e sempre morou na Lagoa do Mato, bairro popular da cidade.
Por falar na terra que tanto ama, a Câmara Municipal aprovou, ano passado, a inclusão do Dia do Poeta Antonio Francisco no calendário oficial de eventos de Mossoró. Antonio já foi homenageado no espetáculo Chuva de Bala no País de Mossoró; e, este ano, já está confirmada grande festa em homenagem aos 70 anos do artista múltiplo.
Recentemente, no programa “Encontro” com Fátima Bernardes, da Rede Globo, foi ovacionado pelo público e pelo escritor cearense Bráulio Bessa, que diz ter se inspirado no mossoroense. “É o maior poeta do mundo”, afirmou Bessa na TV.
ANTONIO FRANCISCO, SUA TERRA E SUA GENTE
Nascido e criado na Lagoa do Mato, o poeta tem fortes laços com a sua terra e sua gente. Seus pais tiveram 17 filhos, sendo 14 criados. “O milagre era diário. Onde faltava dinheiro, sobrava felicidade. Os pré-natais de minha mãe eram lavando roupa no rio”, asseverou o poeta em uma entrevista.
Com o passar dos anos dedicados à poesia, vieram livros valorosos, que orgulham não só o povo mossoroense, como toda a cultura do Nordeste: Por motivos de versos; Veredas de sombra; Sete contos de Maria são bons exemplos. Em 2012, com incentivo da Petrobras, alguns dos seus livros foram transformados em uma coleção, que conta ainda com dois CDs, em que o autor recita seus poemas.
A projeção de Antonio Francisco extrapola os limites dos seus versos; o poeta teve a sua obra ‘Os animais têm razão’ trabalhada dentro de um projeto pedagógico em várias escolas. Por sua vez foi homenageado em Rap, com a música “Brazambique”, dos artistas Shot B e Mossoró RAPentista, mossoroense radicado em Lisboa.
Em um desfile de 7 de setembro, em sua cidade, Antonio Francisco desfilou em carro aberto e foi muito aplaudido pelo imenso público. O momento mais aguardado ficou reservado para a passagem do artista em frente ao palanque oficial, quando ele recitou o cordel ‘Os animais têm razão’.
INCENTIVADORES
Homem simples, do povo, sempre reconhece suas raízes, suas origens, e os que o incentivaram no início da caminhada poética, como, por exemplo, Crispiniano Neto, Nildo da Pedra Branca, Luiz Campos e Aldacir de França.
De vez em quando, encontro com ele por aí, vejo-o de longe, ao lado do jornalista Rilder Medeiros; os dois já têm uma parceria de longa data. Por sinal, a Editora Comunique, gerenciada por Rilder, acabou de publicar o novo livro de Antonio Francisco, ‘Um caroço de manga’, e os dois andam viajando por todo o Estado no projeto “Casa das Palavras”, divulgando tal trabalho.
Às vezes, vejo-o com o poeta pauferrense Manoel Cavalcante, que afirma sempre que tem Antonio como principal fonte de inspiração de sua poesia, e se orgulha de haver recebido um telefonema dele.
Antonio Francisco tem sintetizado e divulgado a cultura nordestina por todo o Brasil, fazendo algo muito parecido com o que Luiz Gonzaga, o Rei do Baião, fazia, conseguindo enorme sucesso entre as massas; e, ao mesmo tempo, tendo seu talento reconhecido pela intelectualidade e pela crítica.
Pois é, caro poeta Antonio Francisco, como no xote de Gonzagão: “De Itaboca a Rancharia, de Salgueiro a Bodocó, você é o maior!”
