Quando faltam conselhos dos pais à educação dos filhos a lacuna aberta pode ser preenchida por bons ou maus exemplos. Escola, amigos da rua, filmes e demais formas de entretenimento ganham força na formação da criança ou adolescente. É o risco pago pela ausência.
É mais ou menos esse o vazio vivido por uma manifestação artística mergulhada numa cena na qual falta crítica cultural, a exemplo do silêncio decano da imprensa potiguar nesta seara. O artista perde uma possível referência abalizada para seu trabalho e o resultado, tais quais as influências educacionais do filho por outros, pode ser maléfica.
Claro, a metáfora é superficial. Há muito em jogo e as regras são quase sempre inválidas quando o assunto é produção artística. O relativismo, a essência e o talento espontâneo falam mais alto que qualquer opinião. Ora, na arte há sempre um significativo percentual de incompreensão alheia. A história comprova isso.
Quantos artistas hoje considerados cults foram amaldiçoados pela crítica? ‘Admirável mundo novo’ de Aldous Huxley foi massacrado por críticos e hoje é cultuado entre clássicos literários. J. D. Salinger, Charles Bukowski e até ‘Moby Dick’, de Herman Melville são outros de tantos exemplos reconhecidos quase um século depois.
Então, a crítica nunca é definição e sim opinião. E sob outro aspecto importante é também divulgação. Uma coluna crítica publicada em veículos de boa audiência incentiva o público a comprar determinado produto ou acompanhar a evolução e produção de determinada forma artística.
Infelizmente, as artes visuais potiguares pouco ou quase nada mereceram atenção ao longo do tempo na imprensa. Exemplos parcos e sem regularidade pontuam essa história. Talvez a exceção seja a coluna do professor, artista plástico e crítico Vicente Vitoriano, publicada semanalmente entre 1994 e 1996, e entre 1998 e 2005 no já extinto Diário de Natal.
Vale ainda a lembrança dos textos sobre arte, estética e poesia, escritos na Tribuna do Norte pelo traço textual e artístico de Dorian Gray Caldas. De resto são referências pontuais. Franco Jasielo, décadas atrás, ou Ângela Almeida e Sayonara Pinheiro, mais recentemente, escreveram críticas de arte de forma esporádica.
A crítica na imprensa alternativa talvez seja mais vasta e também mais escondida entre publicações de poucas tiragens, regularidade ou longevidade. Nessa seara, o artista visual Novenil Barros colocou suas impressões em suplementos, revistas e fanzines. Em menor número, Franklin Jorge, Jota Medeiros, Falves Silva, João Batista de Morais…
É neste novelo histórico de ausência crítica às artes visuais no Rio Grande do Norte que a produção evoluiu e hoje alcança bons níveis técnicos e presença no chão da contemporaneidade, apesar dos pesares. Mas se somos marcantes sem a referência dos nossos “pais”, que dirá se tivéssemos o auxílio dos bons conselhos?

Este texto é uma breve resposta ao artigo publicado por Sérgio Vilar no PapoCultura (20 de junho de 2017). Nada do que diremos aqui é novidade para muitos dos artista de Natal, ainda assim, achamos que é hora de insistir nos lugares comuns. O artigo A IMPRENSA CRÍTICA(DA) NAS ARTES VISUAIS POTIGUARES nos fez ver que há uma lacuna muito maior no que diz respeito ao (re)conhecimento cultural do que se faz no estado do RN do que imaginávamos.
Sim, temos crítica e a crítica que temos conta!
Sérgio Vilar começa o texto falando da ausência da crítica de arte, apontando que quiçá a culpa seja da imprensa, que não vê necessidade, ou não tem interesse, em fazer crítica. Diz que a falta dessa crítica é a causadora da nossa “má educação” artística. Em certo ponto diz que a “crítica nunca é definição e sim opinião” ou divulgação. Posiciona-se desde lugares que eu, Sofia, julgo muito problemáticos. Vilar continua o seu breve argumento até concluir com a infeliz frase: “É neste novelo histórico de ausência crítica às artes visuais no Rio Grande do Norte que a produção evoluiu e hoje alcança bons níveis técnicos e presença no chão da contemporaneidade, apesar dos pesares.”
Eu, Lara, prefiro pensar como André Bazin, nem opinião, nem divulgação. O trabalho do crítico, que me interessa, é o de “prolongar o máximo possível, na inteligência e na sensibilidade dos que o leem, o impacto da obra de arte”. A crítica como um trabalho para o público e, talvez, de formação de público e não um texto-conselho-para-artista, menos ainda uma avaliação de gosto, se o trabalho é bom ou não. Eu, Sofia, penso que a função da crítica não é validar, mas presentear o leitor com uma tradução singular da obra de arte. Cada leitor da obra (seja este crítico, público especializado ou transeuntes anônimos) encontrará dentro de si os códigos para ler e traduzir a obra que vê.
Nenhum artista produz para ser avaliado ou validado. Produz pra pensar, pra criar e problematizar o mundo, pra promover ligações, para conversar. Nesse sentido, o crítico pode se enredar no convite e pensar junto, propor e deslocar questões, espremer, apontar, apagar, fazer mundo junto com sua matéria: seu pensamento e o trabalho do artista.
Se as iniciativas de crítica na cidade são espaçadas ou inconstantes, isso não faz delas menos contundentes. No XIII Salão de Artes de Natal, André Bezerra publicou um artigo crítico sobre a performance no RN (André segue publicando suas pesquisas); Jota Mombaça publicou diversos textos críticos no Substantivo Plural (e tantos outros meios); Pedra Costa, se posiciona criticamente – seja em texto, seja em corpo; eu, Sofia, escrevi o texto crítico da exposição Elefante de Gandhi, e desde 2014 realizo o projeto de mapeamento (e crítica!) Fronteiras e Estados de Sítio. E muitos outros exemplos poderiam compor esta lista.
Se o urgente escapou dos jornais ¬– nos próprios jornais – e migrou para páginas de internet, boletins de informação, timelines de facebook, nos custa entender porque a crítica teria que permanecer ai para ser validada. Os fanzines de Novenil Barros contam, os textos de Jota e de Pedra contam, assim como os de Franklin Jorge, Jota Medeiros, Falves Silva, João Batista de Morais. “A imprensa crítica(da) nas artes visuais potiguares”, publicado em página alternativa, também conta, por isso mesmo estamos aqui respondendo. Assim como contam também os textos publicados no Farofa Crítica. Tudo conta. Absolutamente tudo. São esforços em direção ao diálogo em uma época em que tudo se resume aos likes.
O problema do gênero
Entre tantos homens que para Sérgio valem a pena citar, apenas duas mulheres: Ângela Almeida e Sayonara Pinheiro – cujos exercícios críticos foram desvalorizados logo em seguida pelo caráter esporádico de suas publicações. O leque de gênero, abriu-se uma vírgula. Herman Melville (que era gay) entra como exemplo de autores odiados pela crítica que conseguiram a redenção histórica, mas ainda há um sem fim de nomes de mulheres que continuam até hoje sendo silenciadas. Artistas de fora, artistas de dentro. De ontem e agora. O agora importa muito. A proporção de doze homens para apenas 2 mulheres citadas no artigo mostra que o problema de reconhecimento cultural no estado é um problema de gênero, também, e não pode ser adiado.
Artistas contemporâneos pedem uma crítica contemporânea
Mitos como a essência e o talento espontâneo, para Vilar aparentemente importantes no pensamento artístico, ficaram para trás desde o fim das grandes narrativas históricas. Nenhum artista espera sobreviver à história, porque não há mais sobrevivência possível: as Instituições, a Crítica e a Política estão em crise. Isso nos leva à reformulação. Nenhum autor espera ter sua curta, parca e não-reconhecida existência compensada pelo tempo infinito de sua obra, muito menos pelas narrativas de glória e genialidade que salvavam artistas, cientistas e revolucionários de outra época do esquecimento. O futuro infinito deixou de fazer sentido. O agora é importante – uma segunda vez, porque não há mais futuro.
A crítica, a tradução e a escuta
A arte contemporânea é fundada na tradução. Traduzir é uma ação comumente associado ao gesto de passar um texto original aos códigos de outro idioma. Muitos tradutores (e artistas) acreditam que isso significa imitar o original, fingir que o que se lê não é uma tradução senão a obra primeira. Isso costuma ser entendido como fidelidade ao texto. Ora, cada leitor tem sua maneira de ler, e por isso mesmo, sua maneira de se ler nos traços deixados pelo outro. Isso é traduzir, é um gesto de escuta e transmutação: o eu num outro. E é nisso que se baseia a experiência artística-poética (seja como criador, seja como espectador). A fidelidade deve ser para si mesmo, para com uma experiência irrepetível com a obra.
Sem tradução não há como se penetrar no estranhamento (sempre em aberto) da obra. Agora vocês me dirão como é possível traduzir sem antes ter-se dado a escuta. Não é possível, sem a escuta/leitura não há como existir tradução. É isso o que falta em Natal. Não é a crítica (porque, como já dissemos, já se fez e se faz, de inúmeras maneiras), nem a crítica institucionalizada pela figura do crítico de jornal. As faltas do estado do RN são maiores e anteriores à crítica.
Me tomo, Sofia, de exemplo, tomo a Lara Ovídio, Max pereira, Jota Mombaça, Marcelo Gandhi, Pedra Costa, Elisa Elsie, Natan Ferreira, Mariana do Vale, Rita Machado, João Pedro, Vinicius Dantas, Heloísa Sousa (para citar apenas alguns entre os tantos que somos!): nós estamos fazendo arte para além do território do Elefante (somos transfronteiriços). Mas nossos mapas partem daqui, nossos pontos colidem aqui. Acabamos voltando. Conseguimos escapar do novelo de ausência, mas suas marcas (e fronteiras) continuam conosco. Arrastamos essas linhas nos nossos discursos.
Não é só a ausência de jornais divulgando nossas exposições e palavras que freiam nossos processos, nem a falta da opinião de algum “autorizado” que nos desmotiva. É a ausência de escuta (de um discurso legítimo que possa ser desenvolvido, amadurecido, escutado) que fere repetidas vezes toda tentativa de se criar redes nesta cidade! As coisas existem e estão acontecendo a pesar dessas vozes antiquadas que não nos respondem (porque não nos escutam). Queremos diversidade, diálogo e dissenso, queremos reunião e união. Queremos que toda voz possa ser levantada, escutada, traduzida. Só assim vamos conseguir recuperar (ou inventar) uma autoestima nossa. Empoderar-nos num mapa novo.
Falta formação? Certamente. Mas falta mesmo é reconhecimento aos que continuam no mundo da arte contemporânea, fazendo e desfazendo seus próprios passos (sem a voz legitimadora de um curador, de um crítico profissional, sem um mercado de arte especializado, sem um bom curso de artes visuais, com formação de artistas e professores preparados para os desafios da contemporaneidade). As epistemologias da arte já mudaram há mais de 100 anos – o mictório de Duchamp já é mais velho que Niemeyer e não vai morrer, não é possível voltar atrás. O mundo da arte não quer se pensar desde a técnica, mas desde a poética. A técnica já não é a protagonista de nada. Pensamento e posicionamento profundos, sim.
Estamos num lugar bem distante do chão
Adoraríamos poder fazer do chão o nosso topos e nossa utopia. Ser rastreiros como as formigas de Manoel de Barros. Talvez adotemos essa metáfora, mas não agora.
Não estamos no chão da contemporaneidade, é preciso entender isso, para poder formular qualquer crítica. Absolutamente, não estamos no chão da contemporaneidade. O Rio Grande no Norte precisa se reconhecer como um lugar de pensamento, mas isso não vai acontecer enquanto não houver escutas. Ao invés de contribuir para a consolidação da cena, comentários como o de Vilar, disseminam uma opinião triste, pobre e infundada.
Nós, artistas de Natal (potiguares ou vindos de outros cantos do planeta), queremos conhecer-nos uns aos outros, apoiar-nos. Sozinhos, a gente não vale nada, já diria Rogério Sganzerla. Ou como diria um personagem de La Mala Educación de Almodóvar: “Para cosas malas, las dos juntas. Pero pa’ las buenas, tu sola…”.
