A vocação de Santa Cruz para o turismo religioso vem desde a sua fundação. Uma história marcada por lendas de fé e pela devoção à Santa Rita de Cássia. Hoje, um dos grandes pólos do turismo regional potiguar, o município de nome santo é conhecido como Cidade Santuário e se transformou em um dos principais roteiros do turismo religioso do Nordeste. Não à toa homenageou a padroeira que tem abençoado a cidade com uma estátua monumental considerada a maior imagem católica do planeta.
Santa Cruz está localizada na região do Agreste potiguar, distante 122 quilômetros de Natal. Inicialmente habitada por índios tapuias, iniciou povoamento em 1831 baseada na atividade agropastoril. Hoje, graças à tradição religiosa e a fé em Santa Rita de Cássia, o turismo tem movido a economia da cidade, que desde a construção da estátua, em 2010, tem se estruturado cada vez mais para receber multidões de fiéis e romeiros durante todo o ano.
A crença religiosa do santa-cruzense vem desde o século 19. Conta a lenda que um missionário, sabendo da tradição da árvore inharé, considerada sagrada pelo povoado, mandou erguer uma cruz com galhos dessa árvore, cravada em um buraco onde foram colocadas também todas as armas da população. Com isso, os males da região teriam cessado. E assim o povoado ganhou o nome de Santa Cruz do Inharé, depois resumido a Santa Cruz.
Anos depois a capela de Santa Rita de Cássia viria a ser construída a partir da imagem adquirida pela filha de um dos fundadores da cidade. Hoje a capela é santuário e a padroeira de Santa Cruz já recebeu mais de um milhão de fiéis vindos de todo o mundo, sobretudo durante as quatro romarias inseridas no calendário do município. No mês de maio, quando na data de 22 acontece a celebração à santa no mundo, Santa Cruz recebe mais de 60 mil turistas.
A secular capela existe até hoje, mas no entorno foi construído o Complexo Religioso Alto de Santa Rita de Cássia, no topo do Monte Carmelo, já conhecido em todo o Brasil e composto também por uma sala dos milagres, pela praça do romeiro, auditório, lojas de artesanato, mirante, restaurante, lanchonete, banheiros e amplo estacionamento, além de uma estátua vista a quilômetros de distância, fruto da expressão de amor e fé à “Santa das Causas Impossíveis”, também considerada Madrinha dos sertões.
A ESTÁTUA
A estátua de Santa Rita de Cássia é seguramente a maior imagem católica do mundo. São 56 m, quase 50% acima do Cristo Redentor, no Rio de Janeiro, que mede 38 m.
A construção da estátua de Santa Rita teve início em 2007 e durou três anos até a inauguração em 26 de junho de 2010, ao custo de mais de R$ 6 milhões.
A estrutura projetada pelo arquiteto Alexandre Azêdo de Lacerda é suportada por uma parede de concreto com oito centímetros de espessura em toda a sua extensão.
A Estátua da Liberdade, em Nova York, é um pouco maior, mas é um monumento sem qualquer cunho religioso. Foi um presente da França aos Estados Unidos após os yankes vencerem uma batalha contra a rival Inglaterra.
SANTA RITA DE CÁSSIA
Santa Rita de Cássia nasceu na Itália, filha única de uma família humilde e fervorosa. Após um casamento turbulento com um homem rude, que convertido pela esposa foi assassinado por rixas anteriores, Rita quis entrar para o convento, obedecendo ao chamado que sentia desde menina. As irmãs, porém, estavam em duvida sobre sua vocação, visto que tinha sido casada, o marido fora assassinado e os dois filhos morreram de peste.
Mas numa noite, Santa Rita dormia quando ouviu uma voz chamando: Rita. Rita. Rita. Ela abriu a porta e estavam ali, São Francisco, São Nicolau e São João Batista. Eles pediram que ela os seguisse e depois de andarem pelas ruas, os santos desapareceram e Rita sentiu um suave empurrão. Ela caiu em êxtase e, quando voltou a si, estava dentro do mosteiro, estando este com as portas trancadas. Então as freiras não lhe puderam negar a entrada. Rita viveu ali por 40 anos.
Hoje, vários milagres são atribuídos à santa, a quinta santa católica a possuir mais devotos em todo o mundo. Foi beatificada em Roma, pelo Papa Urbano Vlll. Sua canonização foi no ano de 1900, no dia 24 de maio, pelo Papa Leão Xlll. Além de Santa Cruz, no Brasil, Santa Rita também é padroeira na Cidade de Cássia, em Minas Gerais.
ROTEIRO RELIGIOSO
Além do Santuário de Santa Rita de Cássia, em Santa Cruz, há também outros centros de peregrinação religiosa no Rio Grande do Norte que atraem milhares de fiéis todos os anos: o Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias (Monte do Galo, no município de Carnaúba dos Dantas), o Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Graças ou da Menina Santa (no município de Florânia), e o Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Impossíveis (na Serra do Lima, no município de Patu).
